Christopher Newport Junior Arttu Fiva Nabs Second CAC Men's Tennis Weekly Award

YORK, Pa. -- Christopher Newport Arttu Fiva earned CAC Men's Tennis Player of the Week accolades for March 22, 2016.

Christopher Newport junior Arttu Fiva secured CAC Men's Tennis Player weekly honors after winning all six of his matches in a trio of CAC shutout victories for the 29th-ranked Captains. Fiva dropped just one game in his three singles matches, playing at No. 1, No. 2 and No. 4. In doubles, he teamed with William Trang to earn a pair of 8-1 victories and an 8-2 win at the No. 3 position. Fiva's three singles victories gave him 50 for his career.

NOTES AROUND THE CONFERENCE

All eight CAC teams have now opened up conference play ... Six CAC matchups took place last week, as conference action begins to ramp up ... Mary Washington freshman Derek Hagino went 3-0 in singles and 1-0 in doubles this week for No. 21 Mary Washington. He picked up wins at one against Penn State Harrisburg, at six against Franklin & Marshall, and at two against York. He gained a doubles win at No. 2 against York ... St. Mary's went 3-0 on its spring break trip to Hilton Head, S.C. with 6-3 wins over Ramapo and Edgewood and a 9-0 victory over Frostburg State, before falling to CNU on Sunday ... Salisbury wrapped up its spring break trip to California with a 1-2 mark last week. No. 1 player Eric Spangler went 2-1 in both singles at doubles, with the only losses coming against a pair of nationally-ranked opponents. Spangler and Shanon Gunther won two doubles matches at the No. 1 spot, surrendering just six games with 8-1 and 8-5 victories. The only loss was to Eric Roddy and Jack Gray from Sewanee, the No. 2 ranked doubles team in the nation, where Salisbury's pair held their own, falling 8-4. In singles play, Spangler had wins of 6-0, 6-1 and 6-3, 6-3, and took his only defeat from Avery Schober, the No. 39-ranked player in three sets, 4-6, 6-1, 6-1.

Griffin was the top finisher for the Eagles this weekend against Division opposition at the Navy Invitational, advancing all the way to the finals of his bracket. He defeated Blaise Castleberry of Delaware, 6-7 (3), 6-3, 6-0, then topped Mac Rechan of Georgetown, 1-6, 6-3, 6-4. He then beat Tucker Massey of Navy, 7-5, 6-3, before falling in the final to Elliott Loubataille of UMBC, 6-2, 6-3.
