Christopher Newport Freshman Johanna Ranta-aho Chosen as CAC Women's Tennis Player of the Week

YORK, Pa. -- Christopher Newport freshman Johanna Ranta-aho picked up CAC Women's Tennis Player of the Week accolades for the second time this season on April 18, 2017.

Christopher Newport freshman Johanna Ranta-aho was chosen as the CAC Player of the Week for the second time this year after posting a 5-1 overall record including multiple wins against Division I opponents, helping the Captains secure their first win over a Division I team in 25 years. She swept her three singles bouts and won at No. 1 doubles twice, falling only to George Mason at the top doubles spot. Ranta-aho opened the week with a 6-0, 6-4 win at No. 2 singles against Salisbury, and teamed with Kate Huck for an 8-6 win at No. 1 doubles over regionally-ranked Annika Kezman and Julia Kwedi. She followed that up with a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 1 singles and a 7-6(7) win at No. 1 doubles against Monmouth, helping CNU to a 6-1 team victory. She closed out the week with another singles win over a Division I foe, downing George Mason's No. 1 by a score of 6-2, 6-3, to collect her 20th win of the year. She was won 13 straight matches entering the CAC semifinal matchup vs. Salisbury.

The CAC Tournament began on Saturday, with fourth-seeded York defeating fifth-seeded St. Mary's 6-3 ... The CAC semifinals are set for Wednesday, with top-seeded Mary Washington hosting York and second-seeded Christopher Newport hosting third-seeded Salisbury ... The CAC Championship match is slated for Saturday at the highest remaining seed ... In the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) rankings, Mary Washington is No. 15 and Christopher Newport is No. 23 ... In the ITA regional rankings, UMW is No. 5, CNU is No. 7, and Salisbury is No. 14 ... In the ITA regional singles rankings, UMW's Kait Brogan is No. 11, CNU's Johanna Ranta-aho is No. 17, Salisbury's Annika Kezman is No. 22, and CNU's McKinney Harwood is No. 24 ... In the ITA regional doubles rankings, CNU's Harwood and Alexandra Drye are No. 3, and UMW's Brogan and Taylor Diffley are No. 5 ... Junior Hannah Jabusch helped No. 15 Mary Washington to a CAC win at St. Mary's, and nearly knocked off No. 14 Johns Hopkins last week. She picked up a win at three doubles with Addie Hinton against the Seahawks, and also gained a point with a win at three singles with a 6-0, 6-0 win. She scored a victory at five singles against Johns Hopkins in a 5-4 loss with a 6-3, 7-5 win ... St. Mary's Claire Bodine finished her rookie campaign with a 2-1 record at No. 2 singles, posting a three-set win over Southern Virginia's Micah Morse and a straight-set victory over York's Mckenzie Krout in the CAC Tournament first round. Bodine went 2-0 in first round action as she teamed up with Savannah Bergen for an 8-6 win at No. 3 doubles ... Salisbury freshman Annika Kezman picked up Salisbury's lone point in an 8-1 loss to CNU, winning in straight sets against McKinney Harwood, the No. 16-ranked player in the region. Against Washington College, she claimed a three-set win at No. 1 to help secure a 7-2 team victory ... York junior Katie Wagner went a perfect 6-0 last week and became the program's all-time leader in singles wins, passing former record-holder Kaitlyn Acker. Wagner is now 32-8 all-time which converts to an 80% winning percentage, which is also tops all-time for York. Wagner and Naill earned an 8-6 first doubles win as York advanced to the CAC Semifinal round.  Wagner is 11-3 in first singles for the year and 10-4 in doubles with partner Darian Naill
