Mary Washington Freshman Ryland Byrd Earns Second Straight Men's Tennis Player of the Week Award

YORK, Pa. -- Mary Washington freshman Ryland Byrd collected CAC Men's Tennis Player of the Week honors for the second straight week on April 11, 2017.

Mary Washington freshman Ryland Byrd collected CAC Men's Tennis Player of the Week honors for the second straight week after winning all of his singles and doubles matches this past weekend, including a pair of victories in the Eagles' 5-4 loss to No. 7 Carnegie Mellon. Byrd went 2-0 in singles at the No. 4 and No. 6 spots, and teamed with Michael Fleming for a perfect 3-0 mark at No. 1 doubles. Against Carnegie Mellon, he outlasted his opponent 7-5, 5-7, 6-3 at No. 6 singles, and posted an 8-6 win at No. 1 doubles with Fleming. Byrd and the Eagles completed their ninth straight unblemished CAC regular season with wins over York and Penn State Harrisburg, giving them the No. 1 seed in the CAC Tournament.

NOTES AROUND THE CONFERENCE

Mary Washington completed its ninth straight perfect CAC regular season, improving to 7-0 in conference play with wins over York and Penn State Harrisburg last week. Salisbury (5-1 CAC) and Christopher Newport (4-1 CAC) remain in the hunt for the No. 2 seed and will meet on Wednesday in Salisbury ... In the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) national ankings, Mary Washington is No. 16 and Christopher Newport is No. 33 ... In the ITA regional rankings, UMW is No. 3 and CNU is No. 8 ... In the ITA singles regional rankings, CNU's David Reed is No. 8 and Justin Cerny is No. 23, while UMW's Matt Miles is No. 12 ... Reed and Cerny are also in the doubles regional rankings at No. 3, while UMW's Ryland Byrd and Michael Fleming are No. 7 ... Christopher Newport freshman Andy Mason helped the Captains secure a pair of 9-0 shutouts over Southern Virginia and Frostburg State in league play by going 4-0 individually this week ... Salisbury freshman Ian Siew earned four wins in Salisbury's two road CAC victories last week. At Southern Virginia, Siew won 8-1 at No. 2 doubles with Matthew Ryan and claimed a 7-5, 6-1 win at No. 2 singles ... In the team's win at Frostburg State, Siew and Ryan won 8-0 at No. 2 doubles before Siew finished the week with a 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 1 ... Southern Virginia went 1-2 in CAC action last week, but clinched a playoff spot for the second straight year with a 6-3 win over St. Mary's on Wednesday.

Griffin was the top finisher for the Eagles this weekend against Division opposition at the Navy Invitational, advancing all the way to the finals of his bracket. He defeated Blaise Castleberry of Delaware, 6-7 (3), 6-3, 6-0, then topped Mac Rechan of Georgetown, 1-6, 6-3, 6-4. He then beat Tucker Massey of Navy, 7-5, 6-3, before falling in the final to Elliott Loubataille of UMBC, 6-2, 6-3.
