YORK, Pa. --  Christopher Newport junior David Reed collected CAC Men's Tennis Player of the Week honors for Feb. 21, 2017.

Christopher Newport junior David Reed was honored as the CAC Men's Tennis Player of the Week after winning a pair of matches against nationally-ranked opponents in singles play. Reed defeated 29th-ranked Mark Fallati (7-5, 5-7, 6-2) from 26th-ranked Swarthmore, then took down 40th-ranked Zach Hewlin (4-6, 7-6, 10-7) from 24th-ranked Whitman. He also teamed with Justin Cerny to down another nationally-ranked opponent, 20th-ranked Fallati and Josh Powell from Swarthmore, by a score of 8-5. Reed helped the Captains go 2-1 over the weekend with 5-4 wins over No. 26 Swarthmore and Haverford.

NOTES AROUND THE CONFERENCE

Four CAC men's tennis teams have began their 2017 spring campaigns ... St. Mary's and Southern Virginia open the spring seasons this week, while Penn State Harrisburg begin in mid-March ... Frostburg State opened its outdoor campaign with a 9-0 loss at Shenandoah ... No. 27 Mary Washington opened the spring with a pair of 5-2 defeats to Division I Longwood and GeorgeMason. Senior Brandon Griffin posted a 1-1 mark at No. 1 singles, including a 6-2, 6-2 victory against George Mason ... Salisbury went 3-0 last week with wins over Harford Community College, Juniata, and Stevenson. Freshman Colt Williamson went 4-0 last week for the Sea Gulls at No. 1 singles and doubles. Williamson began his Salisbury career on Saturday with an 8-3 doubles win at No. 1 with classmate Ian Siew against Harford Community College and added a 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 1 singles later in the day. The next day against Juniata, Williamson and Siew came from behind in their doubles match, being 3-0 down, to win 9-8 (7-5), and Williamson earned a 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 1 in singles play.

Griffin was the top finisher for the Eagles this weekend against Division opposition at the Navy Invitational, advancing all the way to the finals of his bracket. He defeated Blaise Castleberry of Delaware, 6-7 (3), 6-3, 6-0, then topped Mac Rechan of Georgetown, 1-6, 6-3, 6-4. He then beat Tucker Massey of Navy, 7-5, 6-3, before falling in the final to Elliott Loubataille of UMBC, 6-2, 6-3.
