Christopher Newport Captures Second Straight CAC Women's Cross Country Championship; Mary Washington's Teagan Young Wins Individual Title
Christopher Newport placed six runners in the top 10 en route to its second consecutive CAC women's cross country championship on Saturday in Rappahannock, Va., while Mary Washington sophomore Teagan Young raced to the individual crown.
CNU totaled 33 points to claim its spot atop the team standings, followed by Mary Washington (45) and York (50) in a tight battle for second place. Salisbury (147), Frostburg State (153), Wesley (195), St. Mary's (208), Marymount (209), Southern Virginia (233) and Penn State Harrisburg (294) rounded out the team scoring.
Young ran away with the individual title with a time of 21:20.6 in the 6k, crossing 22 seconds faster than the second-place finisher - York's Jess Miller, who finished at 21:42.5. York's Caroline DeLany, the 2013 individual champion, placed third at 21:50, followed by CNU's Logan Harrington (22:04.6) and Lydia Cromwell (22:13.8) in fourth and fifth, respectively.
Lauren Braney also posted a top-10 mark for Mary Washington, claiming sixth with a time of 22:15.9. Also placing in the top-16 for the Eagles were Victoria Parent (11th), Rachel Lewis (13th) and Tara Landy (14th).
A four-runner CNU contingent followed UMW's Braney across the finish line, with Julia Machamer (7th), Briana Stewart (8th), Emmie Schmitt (9th) and Hannah Bullen (10th) each posting top-10 placings to help the Captains to the team title.
Other top finishers included York's Jenna Roberts in 12th and Kasey Fogelsanger in 15th, along with Wesley's Dieunise Desir in 16th.
Members of the CAC 25th Anniversary Women's Cross Country Team were honored during the awards ceremony as a part of the CAC's year-long Silver Anniversary celebration.
