Feature Story:  A little bit of home: 3 local stars help drive UMW Eagles

Those who are superstitious may believe bad things come in threes. That couldn’t be more wrong for the Mary Washington University volleyball team.

The Eagles, led by three former local high school stars, have dominated all season long in the Capital Athletic Conference, earning second place and a spot in the semifinals of the conference tournament.

Led by former Albemarle High School standouts players Laura Gomez and Hannah Lawson, and former Covenant School star Ellen Smethurst, Mary Washington has experienced a tremendous season, finishing the regular season 18-8 and winning six of its last nine games.

Gomez and Smethurst, both sophomores, are in their second season at the university. Lawson, a freshman, is experiencing a phenomenal first season.
