Frostburg State Senior Sarah Stephens Named To The 2010 ESPN Academic All-America Team
Frostburg State senior outside hitter Sarah
Stephens (Oakland, Md./Southern Garrett) captured
another award for her work in the classroom as she was named to the
2010 ESPN Academic All-American Volleyball Team as selected by the
College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), Monday
afternoon.
Stephens is one of just 18 student-athletes selected to the college
division All-America team. The college division consists of
institutions from the NCAA Division II and III levels and the
National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA).
Stephens, a second team Academic All-America pick, is a business
administration major with a 3.96 GPA. She is a three-time
All-Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference academic honoree, a
six-time Dean's List student and a two-time CoSIDA ESPN The
Magazine Academic All-District award winner.
Stephens is just the fifth Academic All-American in FSU school history and second from the volleyball program. She is the first Frostburg State student-athlete to earn Academic All-America recognition since the Bobcats joined the Capital Athletic Conference this year.
Stephens is the third CAC volleyball player to be honored by the CoSIDA members, joining Goucher's Laurie Bender (1994 third team) and Salisbury's Kim Rementer (2004 first team) in that group. Overall, she is the 54th student-athlete in the 20-year history of the CAC to earn Academic All-America honors.
Honored as an American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA)
Honorable Mention All-American, Stephens led the Bobcats to a 34-4
overall record and a perfect 8-0 record in their first year as a
member of the Capital Athletic Conference (CAC). FSU earned the CAC
regular season and tournament titles and advanced to the NCAA
Regional Championship game for the first time in school
history.
Stephens, the CAC Player of the Year and three-time all-conference
selection, ranked 16th in the nation in kills per set (4.35) and
20th in points per set (4.87). She led the CAC with 531 kills and
finished almost 200 ahead of the next closest player. She finished
her playing career ranked third in school history in career kills
(1,598) and fifth in career digs (1,159).
Stephens helped Frostburg State to an impressive 114-26 overall
record and four conference tournament titles during her four years
in a Bobcat uniform. FSU appeared in four-consecutive NCAA
Tournaments and hosted the 2010 NCAA Volleyball Regional for the
first time in school history.
Stephens is joined by Kayla Adbell of Lynn, Cara Carson of
Southwest Missouri, Kendra Coulson of Texas Woman's University,
Mollie Lacy of Washburn and Lisa Shiling of Fresno Pacific on the
ESPN Academic All-America Volleyball College Division second
team.
