Frostburg State Volleyball Advances To NCAA Regional Championship With 3-2 Win Over Cortland State

For the second-straight year, and the third time in the last five years, the Capital Athletic Conference championship team advanced to the NCAA Regional championship match when Frostburg State outlasted visiting Cortland State Saturday by a 3-2 margin in the regional semifinal match.

The second semifinal of the day went back-and-forth between Frostburg State and SUNY Cortland. FSU jumped ahead 1-0 (25-20), but Cortland evened the match with a 25-13 win in the second behind a .478 hitting percentage.

The Bobcats surged ahead 2-1 after a slim 25-23 win in the third, only to watch the Red Dragons again tie the match with a 25-21 win in the fourth. However, Frostburg State raced out to a 9-3 edge in the fifth before earning a 15-10 win.

Sarah Stephens had 17 kills and Sabrina Winterling finished with 13. Ashley Coyle smacked 22 kills and had 24 digs in the losing effort for SUNY Cortland.

Last year, CAC champion Salisbury picked up victories over CCNY and SUNY-New Paltz before falling to Christopher Newport in the regional championship match.
