Mary Washington Women's Tennis Collects 15th Straight CAC Title
Top-seeded Mary Washington captured its 15th consecutive CAC Women's Tennis Championship with a 5-1 triumph over second-seeded Christopher Newport on Saturday in Fredericksburg, Va. The Eagles have now defeated CNU in the title match each of the last four seasons.
UMW secures the CAC's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament with the victory. The Eagles will compete in the NCAA Championship for the 22nd straight year, with play set to open next weekend. NCAA brackets and pairings will be annnounced on Monday at noon.
In doubles action, seniors Kait Brogan and Ashley Barrow teamed at one for the first point of the day, as they downed Kate Huck and McKinney Harwood, 8-1. UMW built the lead to 2-0 with a win at two doubles, as Rachel Summers and Caroline Mosberg built a late lead and held on for an 8-6 win. At three, the Eagles fell into a hole early, battled back to take the lead, but fell, 9-7, which put the Captains on the board heading to singles play.
The Eagles gained the fourth point at six singles, as Rachel Cooper took a 6-0, 6-0 decision over Alexandra Drye, setting up UMW for the title. At two singles, Summers gained a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Harwood to clinch the match.
