In all but two year's of the CAC's existence, Mary Washington has taken home the CAC women's tennis trophy at the end of the season. The Eagles carry a 12-year championship streak into this 2016 campaign, and were once again picked by the conference coaches as the favorite in the CAC Women's Tennis Preseason Coaches' Poll.
The Eagles gained six first-place votes and 48 points to sit atop the poll. Christopher Newport, which advanced to the title match last spring, was selected to finish second with 2 first-place nods and 44 points. Perennial contender Salisbury was picked third with 37 points, followed by St. Mary's in fourth (30 points) and York in fifth (25 points).
Southern Virginia, which qualified for the CAC playoffs last spring as the No. 5 seed, was picked sixth in the poll with 17 points. Penn State Harrisburg (13 points) and Frostburg State (10 points) rounded out the poll in seventh and eight, respectively.
The majority of CAC teams have already kicked off their spring campaigns, with several off to strong starts.
The teams will battle through April to gain one of the five CAC playoff opportunities, culminating with the two finalists playing for the CAC crown and an NCAA automatic bid on Friday, April 22.
