York Edges St. Mary's 5-4 in CAC Women's Tennis First Round

Katie Wagner outlasted Melissa Barall in a close two-setter at No. 1 singles to lift fifth-seeded York past fourth-seeded St. Mary's, 5-4, in the first round of the CAC Women's Tennis Tournament on Saturday in St. Mary's City, Md.

With the victory, the Spartans move into the semifinals for the first time since 2011, where they will meet top-seeded Mary Washington on Tuesday. Tuesday's other semifinal will feature third-seeded Salisbury at second-seeded Christopher Newport.

Saturday's first round matchup came down to the wire, as the match was squared at 4-4 with just Wagner and Barall remaining on the court at No. 1 singles. Wagner took the first set, 6-4, and outlasted Barall in a second set tiebreaker, 7-6 (7-5) to give the Spartans the dramatic win.

York entered singles play with a 2-1 advantage, capturing the No. 1 and No. 2 doubles points. Wagner teamed with Darian Naill to win at No. 1 doubles, 8-5, while Rachel Wagner and Mckenzie Krout secured the No. 2 doubles point for York with an 8-2 triumph. St. Mary's tandem of Mollie Johnson and Anna Passaniti put the Seahawks on the board with an 8-3 victory at No. 3.

In singles, Rachel Wagner put the Spartans up 3-1 with a 6-1, 6-0 triumph at No. 2, but the Seahawks tied things up at 3-3 with straight set wins from Katie Chase and Liza Moore at No. 5 and No. 6, respectively.

Krout put York back on top with a 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 3, before the Seahawks pulled even once again as Emily Rost won 6-3, 6-2 at No. 4, setting up Wagner's dramatic win at the No. 1 position.
