Christopher Newport Freshman McKinney Harwood, Mary Washington Head Coach Patrick Catullo Earn ITA Regional Awards
Christopher Newport freshman McKinney Harwood and Mary Washington head coach Patrick Catullo received regional honors from the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) on Friday. Harwood was named the Atlantic South Regional Rookie of the Year, while Catullo secured Coach of the Year honors.
Harwood played all season at No. 1 singles and doubles in dual play, and carried an individual regional ranking in singles play throughout the spring. She earned second team All-Conference honors in both singles and doubles, headlining one of the most historic years in program history. Harwood and the rest of the Captains earned the team's first ever national ranking and reached the CAC finals for the first time.
Harwood finished with an 11-7 record in singles this spring, including an impressive 3-4 mark against regionally-ranked opponents as a freshman. In doubles play, Harwood tied for the third most wins in history, with 21. CNU finished the year with at 14-6 overall mark, led by Harwood's performance on the top line. As a team, the Captains went 7-3 against regionally-ranked opponents and impressed against region opponents, going 11-1.
Catullo guided UMW to a 17-8 overall record, a trip to the NCAA Second Round, and its 12th straight CAC title with an 8-1 victory over CNU in the championship match. Catullo and the 19th-ranked Eagles saw their season come to an end this past weekend in the NCAA Second Round, dropping a 5-1 decision to 13th-ranked MIT on Saturday.
UMW's Shelby Harris will compete at the NCAA singles championships, while Harris and doubles teammates Kait Brogran are alternates for the doubles draw.
