Mary Washington Women's Tennis Clinches Top Seed in CAC Tournament
The No. 20 Mary Washington women's tennis team locked up the top seed in the CAC Tournament with a 6-3 triumph over No. 40 Christopher Newport on Saturday in Newport News, Va. This will mark the ninth straight year that UMW holds the top seed in the CAC postseason.
CNU (11-5, 5-1 CAC) took a lead after doubles, picking up 8-5 wins at No. 1 and No. 2. The Captains No. 1 tandem of McKinney Harwood and Alexandra Drye topped UMW's Caroline Mosberg and Mackenzie Smith, and the No. 2 tandem of Katie Carlson and Logan Eldridge defeated Shelby Harris and Alex Ritter at No. 2. UMW's Chrissy Gaul and Alina Suyama then pulled off an 8-6 victory at No. 3 over Kate Huck and Kristi Wong.
UMW (13-6, 6-0 CAC) battled back in singles play, winning five of six matches. Shelby Harris won at No. 1, 6-4, 6-4; Ritter won at two, 6-3, 6-2; Gaul won at four, 6-2, 6-0; Mackenzie Smith won at five, 6-2, 6-0; and Hannah Jabusch won at six, 6-2, 6-2.
In other CAC action, Salisbury earned an 8-1 win against St. Mary's. The Sea Gulls improve to 5-1 in the CAC and 12-5 overall, and are now in a second-place tie with CNU in the conference standings.
Southern Virginia improved to 2-4 in the CAC with a 7-2 home victory over Penn State Harrisburg.
York snapped its 10-match losing streak in emphatic fashion and picked up its first CAC win as the Green and White downed Frostburg State 8-1 in Frostburg, Md. The Spartans improve to 4-11 overall and 1-5 in the CAC while the Bobcats fall to 1-10 overall and 0-6 in the league.
