Salisbury Women's Tennis Advances to CAC Championship With 7-2 Defeat of Christopher Newport

2014 CAC Women's Tennis Tournament Bracket

The third-seeded Salisbury women's tennis team picked up a 7-2 win over second-seeded Christopher Newport on Tuesday in the CAC semifinals, earning a spot in the CAC Championship this Saturday.

The Sea Gulls (12-7), who avenged their 7-2 regular season loss to the Captains (10-11) with the victory, await the winner of tomorrow's other semifinal matchup between top-seeded Mary Washington and fourth-seeded St. Mary's.

Salisbury jumped out to an early lead in the match, taking each of the doubles matches in tightly-contested matchups.

Sophomore Natalie Savage and junior Roxanne Alban outlasted the 15th-ranked team in the Atlantic South region, Katie Carlson and Jodi Noland, for a 9-7 victory in the No. 1 doubles match. The Sea Gulls' No. 3 team, junior Sam Babo and freshman Claudia Lohn, would also need extra games to claim victory. The duo would take their match 9-8, winning the tiebreaker 7-1.

The Sea Gulls captured the No. 2 matchup, 8-6, with juniors Allison Lutz and Katie Youlios defeating Kelsey Clark and Jackie Gaine.

Salisbury faired equally as well in singles play to earn the victory.

Savage would need extra games in the first set and then cruised to victory over Carlson in the No. 1 singles matchup. The Port Murray, N.J., native, ranked No. 12 in the Atlantic South, would take the first set 7-5 and pull away with the victory in the second set, 6-2.

Alban would also play some bonus tennis to come out on top in the No. 2 spot in the lineup. The Annapolis, Md., native would take the first set, 7-6 (7-5), and finished off Noland with a 6-4 second-set win.

Youlios would pick up her second point of the match over Gaine, taking the No. 3 singles match but needed three sets to do so. Youlios took the first set 6-1 before dropping the second set 6-4. The Wayne, N.J., native took the third set 6-3 to claim the match for the maroon and gold.

The Sea Gulls gained the fourth singles point from the No. 4 spot, as Lutz defeated Clark in straight sets. The Salisbury, Md., product took the first set, 7-6 (7-2), and finished the match with a 6-4 second-set win.

Christopher Newport picked up its points at the end of the singles lineup but it would not be enough to overcome the deficit.
