Marymount Women's Swimming Topples Howard, 102-80
Marymount University’s women’s swimming team defeated Division I foe Howard 102-80 on Saturday afternoon. The Saints improve to 5-3 on the season. Marymount won five events on the day and swept medalist honors in two.
Opening the day with a victory in the 400 medley relay the team of Kassidy Schmidt, Jessica Hester, Bridget Wunderly and Casey Thomas posted a time of 4:17.91 for the win.
The Saints went on to claim the first of two event sweeps. Morgan Parkin, Alison McDermott and Rebecca Preston went 1-2-3 in the 1000 freestyle while Wunderly, Parkin and Hanna Del Signore later swept the 500 freestyle to dominate the distance events.
Thomas posted Marymount’s other two victories – winning both the100 and 200 freestyle events. Katie Moran followed with a second place showing in each of the 50 and 100 freestyle heats while Isabella Blecha finished third in the 50 freestyle.
Marymount also claimed 2-3 showings in the 200 IM, 100 butterfly and 100 backstroke.
In other action Saturday, Mary Washington dropped just its second meet of the year against Gettysburg, 166-96. The Eagles only won three races on the day, dropping their record to 6-2 on the year.
UMW's men's and women's swimming teams dedicated their meet with Gettysburg to helping fight pediatric cancer. The teams helped raise over $1,000 for the Make Some Noise for Kids Cancer Foundation. Amber Kerico won two of the three races for the Eagles in the 200 Fly and the 200 Breast. Kerico edged out Samantha Evangelista by just over a second, with a time of 2:17.22. Amber won the 200 Breast in a time of 2:29.19. Jessica Singer won the only other race for the Eagles in the 500 Free. Singer won with a time of 5:15.73, edging out Lea Candelmo.
