UMW's Amber Kerico Captures 4 Gold Medals In Saturday's CAC Women's Swimming Competition
Mary Washington junior Amber Kerico captured gold medals in four of Saturday's seven championship races - two individual and two relays - as the Eagles pulled away in the team standings at the 2013 CAC Women's Swimming Championships.
Kerico started the night swimming the second leg of the victorious 200 medley relay (1:45.49), and ended it leading off the winning 800 freestyle relay team (7:43.47). In between, the UMW standout took the gold in the 100 butterfly (55.77) and the 100 breaststroke (1:03.91).
She help put UMW over the 700 point plateau heading into Sunday's final day of competition in the championship event. The Eagles' 709 points is more than 300 better than second-place St. Mary's (402). Third place in the championship belongs to Marymount (320), followed closely by York (276), Salisbury (167) and Frostburg State (100).
Also picking up a win for the Eagles Saturday was junior Jessica Singer in the 200 freestyle (1:54.33). UMW picked up the first five places in the event.
Freshman Katie Fago gave the Eagles six wins in seven events Saturday as she took the top step on the awards podium with a 58.62 performance in the 100 backstroke.
Breaking up UMW's run was St. Mary's senior Kelly Heyde, who took top honors in the 400 individual medley (4:30.84).
