INTRODUCING ... York College Sophomore Women's Swimming Standout Heather MacLennan
York College sophomore Heather MacLennan, this week's INTRODUCING ... featured student athlete, is not only one of the top freestyle and backstroke swimmers in the CAC, but she's also a student assistant in the Spartans' Sports Information office.
In the pool, MacLennan is ranked among the top five swimmers in a handful of freestyle and backstroke events heading into the 2009-10 CAC Championships, to be held Feb. 12-14 at St. Mary's College (Md.), including the second-best performance in the CAC in the 200 freestyle (1:56.89.).
What is your background in the sport you play? I have been swimming for 15 years. My high school was state champs in 2005, 2006, and in 2007. I was an individual state champ in 2007. I swam for NCAA Division II University of Tampa and was a part of the NCAA national team.
What is your favorite spot on campus? My favorite spot on campus is my room. It is a place where I can hang out with friends and sleep.
Other than your team, what organization (s) do you participate in (on campus or off campus)? I currently volunteer in the York College Sports Information Office. I help with stats and pretty much anything they need me to do.
What is your major in college, and what is the most important thing you learned in that discipline? My major is Sport Management. The most important thing that I have learned is hard work pays off.
Other than your family members, who was the most influential person in your life? The most influential person in my life is Bethany Hamilton. She is a pro-surfer whose arm was bitten off by a shark. Although she is one arm down, she still surfs. She has taught me never to get up on my dreams if it is something I really want.
If you could give one piece of advice to elementary school children, what would that advice be? Life goes on, work hard, dream big
What is your favorite form of entertainment? My favorite form of entertainment is listening to music because I love to jam out.
Outside of the Capital Athletic Conference, who or what is your favorite sports person or team? My favorite sports person is Aaron Peirsol. He is the current American and World record holder in both the 100 and 200 backstroke. He has won 7 Olympic medals.
Name three (3) people, real or fictional, living or dead, that you'd like to have dinner with? I'd like to start with my grandmother. Unfortunetly, I never got to meet her, but I've learned that she was a very strong woman. Then I'd have dinner with Mark Spitz, because he is one of the best swimmers ever. Last, I'd like to have dinner with the Spice Girls because they're awesome and I'm bringing them back!
