Christopher Newport Secures Second Straight CAC Women's Soccer Championship
Top-seeded Christopher Newport downed second-seeded Frostburg State 4-0 to secure its second straight CAC Women's Soccer Championship on Saturday night at Captains Field.
With the win, CNU becomes the first team to win back-to-back CAC Women's Soccer Championships since the 2003-04 seasons when Mary Washington was capping off a run of four straight league titles. The 4-0 win was also the largest margin of victory in a CAC women's soccer final since Salisbury beat St. Mary's by the same score in 2006.
CNU (18-0-1) earns the CAC's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament with the victory. The 64-team bracket will be announced live on NCAA.com this Monday, at 1:00 pm.
CNU broke the scoreless tie just before halftime, as Alex Miller finished a flicked pass from Taylor Hudgins from close-range in the 42nd minute for what would prove to be the game-winning goal. Gabby Gillis, Keiley McCarthy, and Victoria Reed added second-half scores for the Captains, while Carson Pokorny and Maxine Borris (2) contributed assists in the victory.
