Frostburg State, Penn State Harrisburg And St. Mary's Claim Women's Soccer Victories In Their Final Regular Season Games
Frostburg State, Penn State Harrisburg and St. Mary's closed out their CAC women's soccer regular-season slate with victories Wednesday, helping to finalize the seedings for the upcoming conference playoffs.
2015 CAC Women's Soccer Playoff Bracket
St. Mary's (10-6-0, 8-1-0 CAC) traveled to York to claim a 2-1 overtime decision, temporarily breaking a tie for first place with Christopher Newport (13-4-1, 7-1-0 CAC). The Captains play at Marymount Wednesday needing a victory to clinch the top seed in the 2015 CAC tournament. A CNU tie or loss against the Saints would give SMC the top seed and CNU would be the No. 2 seed.
Regardless of Wednesday's Christopher Newport at Marymount result, both the Seahawks and Captains will draw a bye in the opening round of the tournament (Saturday) and host a semifinal showdown on Tuesday, Nov. 3 (game times TBA).
Frostburg State's 4-0 victory over visiting Southern Virginia clinched the No. 3 seed in the playoffs for the defending champion Bobcats (10-6-3, 6-1-2 CAC). FSU will host sixth-seeded York (6-10, 4-5 CAC) in Saturday's first-round playoff action. York tied Penn State Harrisburg for sixth place in the regular-season standings, but the Spartans gain the playoff nod based on a 4-3 victory over the Lions on Oct. 21.
The Frostburg State result also means Salisbury (11-4-1, 5-2-1 CAC), which hosts Wesley in a regular-season finale Wednesday, will be the fourth seed in the CAC tournament and host fifth-seeded Mary Washington (9-8-1, 4-4-1 CAC) in Saturday's first round of the playoffs. UMW secured the fifth seed in the tournament despite falling Tuesday at Penn State Harrisburg by a 2-1 margin.
At York, Gillian Sawyer's 17th goal of the season, just over three minutes into the first overtime period, lifted St. Mary's past the Spartans and into the top spot in the CAC standings. Claire Kostelnik opened the scoring for the Seahawks with an unassisted tally, her sixth of the season, midway through the first half. York forced overtime when Chelsea McDowell found the back of the net in the 60th minute, her first goal of the season.
At Frostburg State, the Bobcats and Southern Virginia played a scoreless first half before the hosts broke loose for four goals in the second half to claim the victory and third place in the regular-season standings. Danielle Ferris scored her fifth goal of the season to put FSU on the board in the first minute of the second half, and an own goal doubled the Bobcats' advantage. Melanie Bell and Jessie Martz put the game out of reach with insurance goals as FSU outshot the visitors, 22-5. Savannah Uri registered nine saves in the Knights' goal.
After playing 74 scoreless minutes at Penn State Harrisburg, the Lions and Mary Washington erupted for three goals in just over three minutes, with the hosts scoring the last two for the victory. UMW's Lauren Brower opened the scoring with her third goal of the season at 74:07. Just 15 seconds later, Penn State Harrisburg's Kylie Courtney took a feed from Leann Kazawic and put the ball in the goal for her third goal of the season and a tie game. The home crowd was barely back in its seats when Kristen Stark set up Erica Hile's fifth goal of the season at the 76:44 mark to give the Lions the victory. Despite missing the playoffs on a tiebreaker, PSH leads the CAC in scoring this season with 27 goals in conference play and has its highest win total in three CAC seasons.
