Jamie Matlock's Goal Early In The Second Overtime Lifts Stevenson To 1-0 Win Over Frostburg State For CAC Women's Soccer Crown

Stevenson women's soccer freshman Jamie Matlock scored the game's lone goal just 38 seconds into the second overtime as the Mustangs won their first CAC title with a 1-0 victory over Frostburg State Saturday at Caves Athletics Complex.

The win marked the second overall conference championship for Stevenson (12-6-1), which will be making its third appearance in the NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Championship. The Mustangs won a NEAC championship in 2005 and made NCAA tournament appearances in 2000 and 2006.

Matlock's goal in the 101st minute was her fourth of the season and the second game-winner of her career. She also scored the lone goal in Stevenson's 1-0 win over Gettysburg on October 5.

The win extended the Mustangs' unbeaten streak to four-straight overall and four consecutive against Frostburg State.

The women's soccer team is the second team from Stevenson to win a conference championship in the last seven months after the men's lacrosse team captured the school's first CAC title since its joined the CAC prior to the 2007-08 academic year.

Saturday's game featured two of the top three offensive teams in the CAC and six of the top 10 scorers, but also had three of the conference's top goalkeepers.

Stevenson sophomore Lauren Weitzman, who ranks fourth in the CAC in goals against average, won her seventh game of the season and remained unbeaten in her last seven decisions by making four saves over the final 55:38.

Junior Brittany Ross, who leads the conference in both goals against average and saves percentage, made her 15th start of the season and had three first half saves.

Ross and Weitzman highlighted a defense that kept the CAC's top offensive team scoreless despite the Mustangs being outshot 16-10 in regulation and on the short side of a 5-2 margin in corner kicks.

The Bobcats (15-4) entered the game having scored 72 goals this season, including a CAC-record 27 by Amanda Wharton who also leads the conference with 57 points.

Meanwhile, Frostburg State's Michelle Buckmaster, who ranks second behind Ross in both goals against average and saves percentage, finished with five saves.

Selections for the 2010 NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Championship and ECAC South Championshpi tournaments will be released on Monday, November 8.  Stevenson earned an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.  Frostburg State will also likely gain a post-season nod for one of the tournaments.
