Stevenson And Frostburg State Post Three-Goal Wins On The Road To Clinch The Top Two Positions In The 2010 CAC Women's Soccer Playoffs
Stevenson wrapped up its second-straight CAC regular-season women's soccer title with a 4-1 win at Marymount, and newcomer Frostburg State nailed down second place with a 3-0 decision at Salisbury.
Junior Stephanie Eyler, the conference scoring champ the past two seasons, scored her first hat trick of the 2010 campaign and added an assist on a second-half goal to lift Stevenson past Marymount. Stevenson tied Salisbury for the regular-season crown last year, but secured sole possession of the 2010 title Saturday.
Frostburg State's Amanda Wharton, the new CAC single-season scoring record-holder, recorded her 26th goal of the season in the first half, and the Bobcats added two insurance tallies in the second half, to win at Salisbury. FSU, in its first season as a member of the CAC, secured the No. 2 seed in the upcoming CAC playoffs.
Stevenson and Frostburg State will draw first-round byes and host conference semifinal matches on Tuesday, Nov. 2.
St. Mary's secured the No. 3 seed in the CAC playoffs with a 1-1 draw against Mary Washington. Freshman Johanna Rambo evened the score for the Seahawks just six minutes after UMW's Amy Olsen broke the scoreless tie in the 54th minute. The teams will meet again in the opening round of the conference playoffs Saturday, Oct. 30.
The other first-round playoff match on Oct. 30 will feature fifth-seeded Salisbury at fourth-seeded York. YCP is the higher seed because of a 4-2 victory over the Sea Gulls on Sept. 18.
In non-conference action Saturday, Hood posted a 3-0 victory over Lancaster Bible while Wesley fell at Goucher by a 2-1 count.
