York Upsets Top-Seeded Salisbury In PKs, Advances To Women's Soccer Championship Game At St. Mary's

York's defending CAC Champion women's soccer team, the fourth-seed in this year's conference playoff tournament, upset top-seeded Salisbury Tuesday in penalty kicks to advance to the 2008 championship game, which will be hosted by second-seeded St. Mary's on Saturday at 1:30 p.m.

SMC (11-2-3) advanced to the championship game for the second time in team history by holding off sixth-seeded Hood (10-8-2) by a 2-0 margin.   Kaitlin Boswell and Brianne Carroll scored goals 1:09 apart late in the first half for the Seahawks, who also played in the CAC title game in 2006 (losing to Salisbury, 4-0).

York (11-6-2) played Salisbury (8-4-5)  to a 1-1 draw through two overtimes Tuesday, sending the decision to penalty kicks.

Sarah Jessilonis gave the hosts the lead early in the second half off an assist by Katie Marshall, but the Spartans got the equalizer with just over five minutes remaining in regulation on an unassisted tally by Steph Mergler.

YCP, which held a 27-9 shooting advantage during regulation and overtime, outscored the host Sea Gulls, 3-1, in PKs to advance to the conference championship game for the second-straight year.

It's the second-straight year the Spartans were successful in the post-season at Salisbury.  Last year, YCP downed the Sea Gulls in the CAC title game by a 2-0 count.

St. Mary's won the regular-season matchup against visiting York by a 2-0 count on Oct. 18.  Last year's CAC title was York's first in women's soccer.
