Salisbury and Mary Washington Secure CAC Women's Lacrosse Semifinal Victories
CAC Women's Lacrosse Tournament Bracket
Top-seeded Salisbury and third-seeded Mary Washington secured victories in the CAC women's lacrosse semifinals on Wednesday to advance to Saturday's CAC Championship.
In Salisbury, Md., Salisbury downed fourth-seeded Christopher Newport 18-9 at Sea Gull Stadium. The Sea Gulls (17-1) jumped out to a 13-4 halftime advantage over the Captains (10-9) and never looked back en route to the win. Salisbury will be competing in its 16th consecutive CAC title game, and seeking its 16th crown in a row.
A balanced attack paced SU to the win, with 12 different players finding the back of the net. Gabrielle Mongo led the way with five goals.
In York, Pa., Mary Washington sophomore Paige Haskins scored the game-winning goal with 1:47 elapsed into overtime to lift UMW (16-3) past second-seeded York (13-4) by a score of 12-11 at Kinsley Field. The overtime score capped a thrilling second half comeback by the Eagles, who trailed, 9-5, with 19:20 remaining in regulation. The Eagles advanced to their first CAC title game since 2011 with the win.
Julia Albert led the Eagles with two goals and six assists, while Holly Hudson scored three times. York was led by Regan Cook and Meghan Fox, who each had three goals.
The Eagles and Sea Gulls will meet for the 10th time in the CAC Championship and first time since 2011. The two sides have met in the championship game more than any other teams in CAC history. Saturday's championship at Salisbury is set for a 1 p.m. start.
