Salisbury Upends York 7-2 for 15th Consecutive CAC Women's Lacrosse Crown
Second-seeded and 13th-ranked Salisbury upended top-seeded and fourth-ranked York 7-2 in a lower-scoring CAC women's lacrosse championship game on Saturday at Kinsley Field in York, Pa.
The victory marks the 15th straight and 17th overall CAC title for the Sea Gulls (13-5), who earn the CAC's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. The Spartans (14-3) must now wait for NCAA selections to be announced on Sunday, May 7 at 9:30 p.m. to learn their NCAA fate.
The two sides went back-and-forth in the early going, with SU's Lindsey Wagner and Allison Hynson each scoring once and York's Caitlin Rankin finishing a pair of free position shots for a 2-2 score entering the closing minutes of the half.
It appeared as if the two sides would enter the intermission deadlocked at 2-2, but Salisbury forced a York turnover with just 15 seconds left in the opening half and quickly transitioned it into a goal by Dana King on the other end with four seconds remaining, giving the Sea Gulls a 3-2 edge entering halftime.
Kristen Murphy, Hynson, Gabrielle Mongno, and Gabbi Nieves added scores in the second half for the Sea Gulls, including three in the final 10 minutes. The Salisbury defense clamped down on and held the Spartans scoreless in the final 30 minutes.
Gianna Falcone was stellar in net for SU, stopping four shots in the win. Anna Wehland (3 CT, 1 GB) and Kacy Koolage (2 CT, 3 GB) led the Sea Gulls' defensive effort, while Murphy (1g, 2a), King (1g, 1a), and Hynson (2g) led the offense.
