Salisbury and York Women's Lacrosse Post Narrow Victories, Advance to NCAA Sweet 16
Ninth-ranked Salisbury and 11th-ranked York secured second-round victories in the NCAA Women's Lacrosse Championship on Sunday, while 15th-ranked Mary Washington saw its season come to a close with a loss at Washington & Lee.
Salisbury and York advance to next weekend's Sweet 16 with the wins. It will mark the second-straight round of 16 appearance for the Sea Gulls and the second time in the last three years the Spartans have advanced to the second weekend of NCAA's.
In Clinton, N.Y., Salisbury erased a four-goal second-half deficit to defeat host Hamilton 7-5. The Sea Gulls (15-5) will take on Ithaca (14-4) in next Saturday's third round.
Tied 1-1 at the half, Hamilton scored the first four goals of the second frame to take a 5-1 edge. Salisbury responded by scoring the final six goals of the game, led by one goal and three assists from Kristen Murphy, and two goals apiece from Lindsey Wagner and Gabbi Nieves.
In York, Pa., York got a Meghan Fox goal with 20.5 seconds left in regulation to lift the Spartans to a 5-4 win over St. John Fisher The Spartans (15-3) now advance to the Sweet 16 where they will face off against Messiah (16-2) on Saturday. The Spartans also received a career-high 14 saves from junior goalie Charlotte Wright, including a big save on a free position shot inside the final five minutes of regulation.
In Lexington, Va., Mary Washington fell to host and second-ranked Washington & Lee 8-2. The Eagles close the year with a record of 15-6.
