Salisbury Edged by Franklin & Marshall in Overtime of NCAA Women's Lacrosse Quarterfinals
The Salisbury women's lacrosse team dropped its NCAA Quarterfinal matchup in heartbreaking fashion on Sunday afternoon at Sea Gull Stadium, falling 6-5 in overtime to Franklin & Marshall.
The sixth-ranked Diplomats (21-2) advance to next weekend's Final Four, where they will meet seventh-ranked Trinity (Conn.) (18-3). Third-ranked Salisbury ends its season at 18-3 with the defeat.
It was a tight contest throughout, with no more than two goals separating the Sea Gulls and Diplomats throughout the 61:03 minutes of play.
Tied 3-3 at the half, F&M took a 5-3 edge early in the second half with a pair of goals less than three minutes into the frame. Gabbie Nieves pulled the Sea Gulls with 5-4 with an unassisted score at the 18:13 mark, while Gabrielle Mongno evened things up with 3:38 left off a feed from Dana King, sending the game to overtime.
In the extra session, F&M's Gabby Frank scored just over a minute in to lift the Diplomats to the victory.
Nieves led the Sea Gull attack with one goal and one assist, while Kacy Koolage notched four draw controls and a caused turnover.
