Salisbury and Mary Washington Advance to NCAA Women's Lacrosse Sweet 16; York and St. Mary's Bow Out

Salisbury and Mary Washington opened up the 2016 NCAA Women's Lacrosse Tournament with second round victories on Sunday afternoon, while York and St. Mary's saw their season's come to a close with second-round defeats. 

This marked the first time in CAC history that four teams qualified for the NCAA postseason. Wins from Salisbury and Mary Washington mark the second time in the last three years that multiple CAC teams have advanced to the Sweet 16. 

In Salisbury, Md., third-ranked Salisbury took down Cabrini 15-1 at Sea Gull Stadium to advance to the final 16 for the 13th time in the last 14 seasons. The Sea Gulls (17-2) will meet Colorado College (14-2), an 18-2 winner over Rhodes, in the Sweet 16 on Saturday. 

In Fredericksburg, Va., 16th-ranked Mary Washington downed Denison 12-8 behind a five-goal performance from sophomore Holly Hudson. The Eagles (15-4) will meet seventh-ranked Trinity (Conn.) (16-3) on Saturday. 

In St. Mary's City, Md., 10th-ranked St. Mary's struggled offensively in a 10-1 loss to 13th-ranked Brockport State. The NCAA appearance was the eighth in program history for the Seahawks, who end their season at 16-4. 

In Amherst, Mass., 14th-ranked York fell to eighth-ranked Amherst 12-7. After leading 4-3 at halftime, Amherst used a six-goal run to start the second half to open a 10-3 lead and then held off a spirited comeback effort by the Spartans to preserve the win. The Spartans close out their season at 12-7 following the loss.
