Salisbury Claims 14th Straight CAC Women's Lacrosse Crown With 12-5 Victory Against St. Mary's
The third-ranked Salisbury women's lacrosse team captured its 14th consecutive CAC Championship with a 12-5 triumph over 13th-ranked St. Mary's on Saturday afternoon at Sea Gull Stadium.
The Sea Gulls earn the CAC's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament with the victory, improving to 16-2 on the year. This marks SU's 16th CAC title in the history of the program. The Seahawks slip to 16-3 with the loss and will hope to receive an at-large bid to NCAA's. Selections will be announced Sunday, May 8 at 9:30 p.m.
St. Mary's got on board first, as Tori Poffenberger notched an unassisted scole just over a minute into play. The first half was all Sea Gulls after that, however, as the hosts seven-straight goals to enter halftime leading 7-1.
After the intermission, the Seahawks cut the SU lead to five, at 8-3, on another Poffenberger tally at the 22:09 mark, but the Sea Gulls received three straight goals in the middle of the second half from Dana King, Lindsey Wagner, and Gabbi Nieves to put an end to any Seahawks' run.
Salisbury successfully ran time off the clock with methodical offensive possessions down the stretch, securing the 12-5 victory. Nieves was key on both ends of the field, scoring a hat trick and also compiling five ground balls and two caused turnovers.
Megan Wallenhorst notched two goals and three assists to lead the Sea Gull attack, while King added a goal and two assists, and Hannah Young scored twice. Gianna Falcone was stellar in net for Salisbury, making eight saves and surrendering just five goals.
Poffenberger notched a hat trick to lead St. Mary's, while goalkeeper Kayla Dunn turned away six shots in the loss.
