CAC Record-Tying Five Teams Headed to NCAA Men's & Women's Basketball Tournaments

A CAC record-tying five teams have been selected to continue their season in the 2016 NCAA Division III Basketball Tournaments beginning this weekend. 

On the women's side, a conference record-tying three teams earned bids. Mary Washington earned the CAC's automatic bid with its sixth conference title in program history, while Marymount and Christopher Newport both earned at-large berths into the postseason field. 

For the men, Christopher Newport claimed the CAC's automatic bid with its first-ever conference title, while Salisbury secured an at-large bid. 

This marks just the second time that a total of five men's and women's teams will compete in NCAA's with the other coming in the 1995-96 season. It is third time that three CAC women's teams made the field, with the others occuring in 2008-09 and 1995-96.  


The CNU men will host first and second round action at the Freeman Center. The Captains (26-1) take on Lycoming (19-9) in Friday's first round at 7:30 p.m., with NYU (20-5) facing Brooklyn (22-6) in the other opening-round matchup in Newport News. 

The Captains, riding a 17-game winning streak, will be playing in NCAA's for the 20th time in program history and the first time since the 2012-13 season. 

Salisbury (21-6) will take on Middlebury (17-10) in Friday's first round at Stockton University in Galloway, N.J. Host Stockton (21-6) will take on Keene State (18-10) in the other first round contest. 

The Sea Gulls will be competing in the NCAA Tournament for the second straight season and seventh time in program history. SU advanced to the second round last year. 


The Mary Washington (24-4) women will head to Maryville (Tenn.) to take on Maryville (24-3) in Friday's first round. Lynchburg (24-4) will take on Birmingham Southern (24-3) in the other contest. The Eagles will compete in the NCAA Tournament for the eighth time under head coach Deena Applebury and the 10th time overall. 

Marymount (22-5) travels to Scranton, Pa. for a first-round matchup against Cabrini (19-9). Host Scranton (27-0) will meet WPI (24-4) in the other game at the John Long Center. The Saints return to the NCAA postseason for the 17th time in program history and the second time under head coach Ashlee Rogers

Christopher Newport (22-4) will play on a neutral floor against St. Joseph's (Maine) (23-5) on the campus of Muhlenberg College in Allentown, Pa. Muhlenberg (24-2) hosts St. John Fisher (22-4) in the other first-round game in Memorial Hall.
