Christopher Newport and Marymount Women's Basketball Win First Round NCAA Tournament Matchups

Marymount and Christopher Newport secured first round victories in the NCAA Women's Basketball Tournament on Friday night, while CAC champion Mary Washington saw its season come to a close. 

In Scranton, Pa., 24th-ranked Marymount topped Cabrini, 60-49, advancing the Saints (23-5) to the second round for the 12th time in program history and first time since 2013. Marymount will face off against third-ranked and unbeaten Scranton (28-0), a 67-42 winner over WPI, on Saturday at 5 p.m. 

The fourth quarter was the decisive period for the Saints, as they outscored Cabrini 23-13 in the final period to claim the 11-point win. Nicole Viscuso led Marymount with 18 points and 10 rebounds, Leah Hurst notched 16 points, six rebounds and four steals, and Aileen Maknati added 14 points and four boards. 

In Allentown, Pa., 21st-ranked Christopher Newport outscored St. Joseph's (Maine) by 18 points in the second half to claim a 65-47 triumph in first round action at Muhlenberg College. The Captains (23-4) advance to the second round for the third time in the last four years, where they will meet 11th-ranked Muhlenberg (25-2), an 81-72 winner over St. John Fisher. The Captains and Mules will meet at 7 p.m. at Memorial Hall. 

Tied at 25-25 at the half, CNU came out firing following the intermission, limited St. Joseph's to just six points in the third quarter to grab a double-digit advantage. A career-high 20 points from Jasmine Bonivel, including 4-for-6 shooting from three-point range, led the CNU scoring. Sam Porter just missed a double-double with 17 points and nine rebounds, while Devon Byrd added 12 points and eight boards. 

In Maryville, Tenn., host and 12th-ranked Maryville outscored 20th-ranked Mary Washington 29-15 in the fourth quarter to overcome a three-point deficit and grab a 67-56 win over the CAC champion Eagles. UMW's season comes to a close with a record of 24-5 following the defeat. 

Brianne Comden led the Eagles with 16 points and six rebounds, Elizabeth Dofflemyer posted 11 points and seven boards, and Sarah Listenbee also reached double figures with 10 points along with five boards.
