Christopher Newport and Marymount Post Home Wins, Setting Up First-Place Showdown on Saturday
No. 16 Christopher Newport and Marymount each claimed home victories on Wednesday night, setting up a showdown with first place on the line for Saturday's regular season finale in Newport News.
Five of the six CAC playoff spots have already been secured, with CNU (15-2), Marymount (15-2), Mary Washington (14-3), York (12-5) and Salisbury (8-9), locked into the six-team postseason tournament.
The sixth and final playoff bid remains up for grabs, with St. Mary's (6-11) and Penn State Harrisburg (6-11) still in the running.
CNU has secured at least a top-two seeding and first-round bye following Wednesday's comeback 58-55 victory over St. Mary's. The win was the 17th-straight for the Captains. A victory over Marymount on Saturday would give CNU the No. 1 seed, while a loss would slide the Captains into the No. 2 seed.
Marymount topped Salisbury 50-38 at home on Wednesday, as the Saints got back into the win column after their loss to Mary Washington last Saturday. The Saints will be a top-three seed in the CAC Tournament, depending on this Saturday's results. A win over CNU hands the Saints the regular season crown, while a loss could drop them to No. 3. The Sea Gulls, meanwhile, will be the No. 5 seed in the playoffs.
Mary Washington kept its hopes for a first-round bye alive with an 85-45 home victory over Southern Virginia. The Eagles close out the regular season at Penn State Harrisburg on Saturday. A win and a Marymount loss would propel the Eagles into the No. 2 seed.
York, a 71-49 road winner at Frostburg State, will be the No. 4 seed in the tournament and host No. 5 Salisbury in a first-round matchup on Tuesday, Feb. 23.
Penn State Harrisburg defeated Wesley 69-57 to keep its playoff aspirations alive. The Lions need a win vs. UMW on Saturday and a St. Mary's loss to Wesley to snag the final playoff spot. A St. Mary's victory over Wesley would hand the Seahawks the No. 6 seed.
