Mocniak's Late Heroics Lift Salisbury Past Mary Washington in Double Overtime for CAC Women's Basketball Title

In a championship game for the ages, top-seeded Salisbury outlasted second-seeded Mary Washington 74-68 in double overtime on Saturday at Maggs Physical Activities Center. The win is the Sea Gulls' fourth CAC title in program history and first since the 2001-02 season.

The Sea Gulls (25-2), ranked 18th in the USA Today Coaches' Poll and second in the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Region, receive the CAC's automatic bid to the NCAA postseason, while the Eagles (20-7) must now wait for Monday's NCAA bracket selection show in hopes of receiving an at-large bid.

In the first double overtime CAC Championship game in league history - and just the second title game to stretch to an overtime period - Salisbury routinely staved off late deficits with some clutch shooting - none more so than from senior Melanie Mocniak.

With the Sea Gulls trailing 57-54 with 15 seconds left in regulation, Mocniak was fouled on a three-point attempt and calmly sank all three free throw attempts to tie the game. Salisbury then stymied Mary Washington's final possession to send the game into extra time.

It was a bit of deja vu in the overtime period, as the Sea Gulls were again down by three with time winding down, and Mocniak once again got fouled on a late three-point attempt - this time with 26 seconds left - and once again drilled all three attempts from the charity stripe to tie things up at 63-63.

UMW's Claire Haeuptle got fouled on the Eagles' next trip down the floor and sank both free throws to give UMW back the lead, 65-63, with 13 ticks on the clock. The Sea Gulls responded in a do-or-die situation, however, as senior point guard Anna Hackett weaved her way into the lane and fed Kathy Albornoz for a layup to send the game into double overtime at 65-65.

In the second overtime, Haeuptle drained a three-pointer on UMW's first possession to give the Eagles a 68-65 advantage, but the Sea Gulls outscored the visitors 9-0 the rest of the way - including five from Mocniak - to seal the win and bring the CAC trophy back to Salisbury.

Hackett led all scorers with 26 points, six assists and three steals, while Mocniak totaled 15 points with 11 of those points in the overtime periods. Sarah Seipp also reached doubled figures with 10 points for SU.

Haeuptle led the way for UMW with 18 points, Caitlin Ciniero tallied 15 points and nine rebounds, and Brianne Comden grabbed a game-high 14 boards for the Eagles in the loss.
