Following their conference title victory last Saturday, the
Spartans received the league's automatic bid into the NCAA
Tournament. With brackets released this afternoon, the Green and
White are headed to the Christopher Newport pod, which will also
feature Johns Hopkins and Richard Stockton.
The Spartans will open up with #12 CNU on Friday at a time that has
yet to be determined. This is a remarkably familiar situation as
the Green and White faced Newport in the first round of the 2009
NCAA Tournament in York. It proved the Spartans' day in that
contest as York won 75-61. However, the Captains, the 2011 USA
South champions, are a much-improved squad over that 2009 version
and feature All-American senior guard and 2,695-point scorer
Chelsie Schweers, the leading scorer in Division III this season at
25.2 points per game.
"It will absolutely be a tough test for us, no doubt about that,"
Spartan head coach Betsy Witman said. "But our team is a group that
looks forward to these types of difficult challenges. I know they
will be excited for this contest."
In the other game, Johns Hopkins takes on Richard Stockton as a
pair of at-large squads face off in round one. Hopkins, who the
Spartans beat in York's first game of the season 66-62, has put
together a strong 21-5 campaign while the Ospreys from Stockton
begin the tournament with a 17-9 record.
The Spartans face a tough opening pod, but riding high off their
CAC Championship, the Green and White will look to keep their
tremendous season going.
