Wesley And York Advance To Semifinals Of CAC Women's Basketball Playoffs

Wesley and York both jumped out to early leads and successfully held off lower-seeded visiting teams to pick up CAC Women's Basketball Tournament victories Tuesday and advance to the conference semifinals.

Third-seeded York (14-12) defeated sixth-seeded St. Mary's College of Maryland (11-14), 74-61, advancing the Spartans to Thursday's semifinal round showdown at second-seeded Marymount (13-9).

At Dover, Del., fourth-seeded Wesley (15-11) raced out to a 17-2 lead on the way to a 65-48 victory over fifth-seeded Frostburg State (12-14).  The Wolverines earned a trip to Fredericksburg, Va., Thursday for a semifinal clash at regular-season champion Mary Washington (20-5).

Both of Thursday's semifinal games begin at 7 p.m.  The winners advance to Saturday's championship game, to be played at the home court of the higher-seeded team, beginning at 2 p.m.

York's freshman dynamic duo of Aja Wallpher and Kelsey Murphy led the Spartans to the first-round win.  Murphy poured in a game-high 19 points, Kristen Haley was one of three Spartans with 12 points and grabbed a team-best nine rebounds and Wallpher contributed seven points, eight rebounds and dished out 12 assists for the winners.  Jamie Roberts (11 pts.) and Pui Sham (10 pts.) paced the Seahawks.

Wesley jumped out to a 17-2 lead and never looked back, picking up a decisive 65-48 win over Frostburg State.  The Wolverines, who won for the eighth time in their last nine games, were powered by the senior trio of Angie Owens, Cory Boyd and Allison Beddia, who combined to score 44 points in the game. 

Owens had her fourth straight double-double, and sixth in the last seven games, with 17 points on 7-of-10 shooting and 10 rebounds.  Boyd turned in another stellar all-around effort with 14 points, six rebounds, eight assists, three blocks and a pair of steals.  Beddia gave Wesley three players in double figures with 13 points, including three threes. Mindy Sharp paced the Bobcats with 16 points, eight rebounds and a pair of blocks.  Elaina Hummel added 15 points.
