2023 C2C Outdoor Track and Field Awards Revealed

The 2023 Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference (C2C) Men's and Women's Outdoor Track & Field All-Conference honors have been announced:

Men's Athlete of the Year: Shea Wissler - UC Santa Cruz

Coming off an amazing indoor season where he was an All-American, Shea Wissler kept his momentum going in the outdoor portion.  The senior from Torrance, qualified for the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships in the decathlon with a school-record 6,662 points, the sixth best mark in the nation. During the outdoor season, he set PRs in eight events. At the C2C Outdoor Championships, he was runner-up in the Pole Vault with the third-best mark in school history, as well as fourth in both the 110H and High Jump, and seventh in the discus.  Wissler closed the year finishing 11th in the decathlon at the NCAA Championships, becoming just the second Banana Slug ever to make it to two national championships.

Women's Athlete of the Year: Alyssa Roach - Christopher Newport

A well-rounded star at Christopher Newport, Alyssa Roach was named the C2C Women's Outdoor Track and Field Athlete of the Year after winning the indoor honor in March. During the spring, she walked away with four All-Conference awards, including her second straight league title in the long jump. Additionally, she placed second at the conference championships in the 100-hurdles, 400-hurdles, and high jump.  Roach ranked 27th nationally in the Heptathlon and 32nd in the 100m Hurdles.

Men's Rookie of the Year: Kai Smith - Salisbury

Kai Smith secures the Indoor-Outdoor Rookie of the Year sweep after medaling four times at the C2C Outdoor Track and Field Championships. The Upper Marlboro, Md. native captured a trio of gold medals, including in the 200 meters (21.61) and 400 meters (personal-best 48.48) and as first leg of the 4x400-meter relay team (3:22.32), as well as a silver anchoring the 4x100-meter relay team (41.65). Smith earned Men's Track Athlete of the Meet honors after helping Salisbury win its first C2C men's championship since 2015.

Women's Rookie of the Year: Marlyse Haack - Salisbury

Marlyse Haack takes home Rookie of the Year laurels after finishing top-five in all five of her events and medaling in four at the C2C Outdoor Track and Field Championships. The Waretown, N.J. native won a silver medal in the triple jump (personal-best 10.99m, 36-0.75) and as the first leg of the 4x400-meter relay team (4:18.60). Haack also earned bronzes in the long jump (personal-best 5.21m, 17-1.25) and as second leg in the 4x100-meter relay (49.86), plus a fifth-place showing in the 200 meters (26.29).

Men's Scholar-Athlete of the Year: Sean Riedel - UC Santa Cruz

One of the most decorated distance runners in school history, Sean Riedel capped off his Banana Slug career in style- both on the track and in the classroom. He won the 10,000-meters conference championship for the second year in a row.  The graduate student from Boulder, Colorado, has a 4.0 GPA and is finishing his masters in applied mathematics.

Women's Scholar-Athlete of the Year: Adrianna DeSantis - Christopher Newport

Named the C2C Women's Outdoor Track and Field Scholar-Athlete of the Year, Adrianna DeSantis completed a clean sweep of the academic award after securing the indoor honor in March. A neuroscience major and reigning Academic All-American, she has remained one of the conference's top track standouts. During the spring, she claimed the league crown in the 400 while also earning All-Conference nods as a member of the 4x100-relay.

Men's Coaching Staff of the Year: Jim Jones - Salisbury

Jim Jones, who just completed his 24th season leading the Salisbury track and field program, is the C2C Men's Outdoor Coach of the Year for the 10th time overall and first time since 2015. He and his staff oversaw a breakthrough 200-point performance that secured the men's team championship by 24 points. The Sea Gull men won eight gold medals, plus seven silvers and eight bronzes, and swept the podium in the discus and javelin throws.

Women's Coaching Staff of the Year: Tyler Wingard - Christopher Newport

Leading Christopher Newport to the program's third straight outdoor conference title, head coach Tyler Wingard helped the Captains claim 241 points at the league competition, which marked the highest team total since 2013. During the title meet, the women secured 11 conference crowns and earned 20 All-League honors. The squad also compiled seven All-Region awards, including three by Alyssa Roach, who was honored as the C2C Women's Outdoor Track and Field Athlete of the Year.

Below are results from the 2023 C2C Outdoor Track and Field Championships. The champion and runner-up in each event (including relays) earned all-conference first and second team recognition, respectively.
