Christopher Newport and Frostburg State Post Wins on Opening Day of CAC Softball Tournament
Top-seeded Christopher Newport and second-seeded Frostburg State each secured victories on the opening day of the CAC Softball Tournament on Thursday at Captains Park, setting up a Friday winner's bracket matchup between the top two conference seeds.
Thursday's action featured a pair of upsets, with fifth-seeded Mary Washington notching a win in game one over fourth-seeded York, 4-0. Kara Deppe pitched a gem for the Eagles, allowing just three hits while striking out 10 in the shutout.
In game two, second-seeded Frostburg State defeated third-seeded Salisbury 8-3 to advance in the winner's bracket. Starter Allison Short earned her 14th victory of the spring campaign after tossing 6.0 innings with three earned runs on nine hits. Emily Harvey was a perfect 3-for-3 on the afternoon with two runs and an RBI.
Christopher Newport then blanked Mary Washington 9-0 in six innings. Aubrey Bates threw all six innings for the Captains, and allowed no runs on just two hits and struck out nine. Rachael Shiflett was 3-for-3 at the plate with an RBI for CNU. The Captains will face Frostburg State on Friday at 10 a.m. with a spot in the championship round on the line.
In the fourth and final game of day one, York eliminated Salisbury with an 8-7 victory. Carleigh Ruleman led the Spartans with two hits and five RBIs, including a grand slam in the fourth frame. York will face Mary Washington at noon on Friday in an elimination game.
