Christopher Newport Softball Tops Ferrum in NCAA Regional Opener; Salisbury Falls to Haverford

On the opening day of the NCAA Softball Regional Tournaments, 10th-ranked Christopher Newport came away with a shutout victory over Ferrum while second-ranked Salisbury dropped a tough one-run contest to Haverford.

In Newport News, Va. host CNU blanked Ferrum 3-0 behind a complete-game shutout performance from junior Tara Heatwole. CNU is now 35-7, and will play 11th-ranked Messiah College as play resumes on Saturday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. Messiah defeated Ferrum 5-4 in Friday's other contest in the three-team, double-elimination regional.

In Norfolk, Va., Salisbury was edged 1-0 in a pitchers' duel against Haverford. The two sides combined for just six hits throughout the contest, with Haverford's Kendall Chambers producing the only run with a sole homer in the top of the fourth.

With the loss, Salisbury now needs two wins in each of the next two days to advance through the weekend. Up next for the Sea Gulls is No. 1 Virginia Wesleyan, which lost on Friday to Saint Vincent, 2-0. The first pitch for Saturday's elimination game is 1:30 p.m.
