Salisbury Softball Tops Christopher Newport for 19th CAC Championship

Top-seeded Salisbury completed its unbeaten run through the 2016 CAC Softball Tournament with a 2-1 triumph over second-seeded Christopher Newport on Saturday morning in Salisbury, Md. The Sea Gulls collected their 19th overall conference championship with the victory and first since 2013.

With the victory, the fifth-ranked Sea Gulls earn the CAC's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament, while the eighth-ranked Captains will hope to earn an at-large bid to the NCAA postseason.

Saturday's championship matchup was the third straight between the Sea Gulls and Captains and yet another one to remember. All three of the runs throughout the contest came in the opening frame.

CNU jumped on top in the top of the first as Scoop Simon ripped a solo home run to left field. Salisbury answered right back in the bottom half of the first, spearheaded by Kim Dorsey's two-RBI double to right field that scored Annah Brittingham and Paige Knussman

The remainder of the contest was a back-and-forth pitcher's duel, with Brittingham and CNU's Tara Heatwole each going the distance. Brittingham struck out seven and walked three and surrendered just five hits in the victory, while Heatwole allowed nine hits and struck out one with no earned runs to her name.
