Salisbury, Christopher Newport, Frostburg State and York Notch Softball Sweeps on Wednesday
No. 5 Salisbury, No. 9 Christopher Newport, Frostburg State and York each posted CAC softball sweeps on Wednesday as the CAC season inched closer to the playoffs.
With just this weekend remaining in the regular season, Salisbury (9-1 CAC) controls its own destiny for the No. 1 seed, while Christopher Newport (10-2) and Frostburg State (8-2) are still in the hunt for the top spot. York (6-6), Mary Washington (6-6), and Wesley (5-7) are battling for the two remaining playoff bids.
On Wednesday, Salisbury secured its 10th straight victory with a pair of shutouts at Wesley, 6-0 and 14-0 in five innings. With the defeats, the Wolverines remain in the playoff chase but must win at least one game of Saturday's doubleheader at CNU.
CNU also posted a pair of shutout wins, blanking Mary Washington 8-0 in five innings and 8-0 in six innings. It marks the tenth straight season the Captains have recorded at least 30 wins, moving to a 30-5 record on the year.
York earned a sweep of Penn State Harrisburg as the Spartans defeated the Lions 7-5 in the opener and completed the sweep with a 9-0 five inning win in the nightcap. The Spartans hit a pair of home runs in the two games as they have broken the single season school record for home runs in a season with 24 round trippers as a team. The losses drop the Lions out of playoff contention.
Frostburg State swept both of its games against Southern Virginia. The Bobcats earned a 2-1 victory in game one before shutting out the Knights, 10-0, in the nightcap. Frostburg State will host York on Saturday and Salisbury on Sunday to wrap up the regular season.
