Salisbury Blanks Christopher Newport 8-0 in NCAA Softball Super Regional Opener

Rachel Johnson tossed a one-hitter while Paige Knussman and Annah Brittingham combined for five RBIs to lead fourth-ranked Salisbury to an 8-0 victory over 11th-ranked Christopher Newport in game one of the best-of-three NCAA Softball Super Regional on Friday afternoon at the SU Softball Field.

Game two of the series is set for 1 p.m. Saturday. A CNU win would force a decisive third game, slated for 3:30 p.m.

The Sea Gulls (34-6) captured the win in six innings due to the eight run rule, earning their first victory over CNU (30-8). The Captains had won the previous three meetings between the two squads prior to Friday's contest, including the CAC Championship game.

Johnson went the distance, yielding only a fifth inning single up the middle to CNU's Rachael Shiflett. The senior righthander struck out seven and walked three while improving to 22-5 on the season.

Knussman posted a double, her eighth home run of the season, three RBIs and two runs scored, while Brittingham went 3-for-4 with two RBIs for the Sea Gulls.
