Salisbury Softball Drops NCAA Championship Series to Tufts; Sea Gulls Finish As National Runner-Up
The Salisbury softball team's remarkable run through the NCAA Championship came to a close on Tuesday afternnon, as the Sea Gulls dropped a 6-0 decision to Tufts in the third and final game of the best-of-three championship series in Tyler, Texas.
With the victory, Tufts (47-4) secured its second consecutive NCAA title, while the Sea Gulls conclude the year at 44-5. This marks the third time (also in 2003 and 2005) Salisbury has finished as the national runner-up.
Tufts starter Allyson Fournier took to the mound again for the Jumbos, throwing a complete-game with five strikeouts and allowing just six hits. Fournier pitched all 28 innings of the championship series for the Jumbos.
After a scoreless opening frame, Tufts notched two runs in the top of the second and four in the third to claim a 6-0 advantage.
Salisbury threatened with runners in scoring position in the fifth, sixth and seventh frames, but were unable to advance any runners across home plate, as Fournier completed the shutout on the mound for the Jumbos.
