Salisbury Starts NCAA Softball Regional Tournament With 4-0 Win Over Farmingdale State
The 10th-ranked Salisbury University softball team got its 2011 NCAA Division III Softball tournament run started the right way on Thursday afternoon, defeating Farmingdale State College in its first game of the Salisbury Regional.
The 4-0 decision was the Sea Gulls' 11th-straight shutout victory, and extended their win streak to 25 games. Salisbury is now a perfect 16-for-16 in home contests this year.
Three of Salisbury's (34-4) four runs came in the first inning. Sophomore Lindsay McCabe's single brought classmate Sarah Alpaugh home for the Sea Gulls' first score of the day, and a single off the bat of junior Casey Zaino, combined with an error by the Rams (32-6), brought McCabe and sophomore Michelle Gravdahl across the plate for the three-run advantage.
The final run of the day would come in the top of the third inning, as a big double by senior Taylor Webb scored sophomore Hannah Mills. Webb went 1-for-2 at the plate, slamming one of Salisbury's two doubles; the other double belonged to Alpaugh, who went 2-for-3. Seven Sea Gulls registered hits in the victory.
Junior pitcher Erika Brittingham earned her 23rd win of the season, allowing just one hit while striking out 15 of the 24 batters she faced.
The third-seeded Sea Gulls have less than 24 hours to rest and regroup, as their next Regional game is set for tomorrow (Friday, May 13) at 4 p.m. Salisbury will face the winner of tonight's final contest, between seventh-seed Shenandoah University and second-seed Rowan University.
