Salisbury Softball Undefeated Heading Into Sunday's Final Round Of CAC Tournament Vs. Frostburg State
Top-seeded Salisbury improved to 3-0 in the 2011 CAC Softball Championship Tournament and will host third-seeded Frostburg State for the title Sunday.
The ninth-ranked and top-seeded Sea Gulls started the day by extending their win streak to 21 games with an 8-0 five-inning victory over third-seeded Frostburg State in a battle of unbeaten teams in the tournament.
Second-seeded Mary Washington followed by needing eight innings to knock sixth-seeded Stevenson out of the double-elimination tournament by a 5-4 count. FSU then ended the day with a 4-2 victory over UMW to advance to Sunday's finale vs. Salisbury (noon).
The Bobcats, in their first season as members of the CAC, need to beat the Sea Gulls twice Sunday to win the title. Salisbury has won the CAC title 14-straight years.
In Saturday's first game, Salisbury defeated Frostburg State 8-0 in five innings to advance to Sunday's championship game of the CAC tournament. Salisbury (30-4) took the lead in the first inning, scoring three runs, and never looked back continuing to score four runs in the third and a walk off home run in the fifth inning to end the game.
Sophomore Hannah Mills went 2-for-2 at the plate as she homered in the first inning to bring two runs across the plate, was walked in the third inning, and ended the game early in the fifth inning as she drilled her eighth home run of the year, second of the game, over the center field fence. Junior pitcher Erika Brittingham tossed another no-hitter, going all five innings as she collected her 20th win of the season. The Georgetown, Del., native struck out seven Frostburg State (15-16) batters and walked one.
Mary Washington then topped Stevenson , 5-4 in eight innings,
before falling to Frostburg State University, 4-2, in being
eliminated from the Capital Athletic Conference Tournament on
Saturday in Salisbury, Md. The Eagles move to 19-21 on the
season.
In the win over Stevenson, the Eagles scored three times in the
first, as Brandee Aadams and Morgan
Lamon walked before Amanda
Adams connected for her second home run of the
season. Lamon would single home Michelle
Durnavich for the Eagles' run in the fifth, and
Krissy Leber provided the game winning
RBI to score Lamon on a pinch hit single.
Junior Danielle Cunetta got the win
with two innings of one-hit relief of Nicole
Black, who allowed six hits in six innings with a
pair of strikeouts.
In the last game of the day, a three-run fifth inning broke open a
scoreless tie and vaulted the Frostburg State into
the tournament finals with its 4-2 victory over Mary
Washington.
Sophomore Megan Foy singled after one
out, and senior Jacki Lynch doubled her
to third. Senior outfielder Brooke
Tapman knocked Foy in while reaching on an error by
the shortstop to make it 1-0. After a Tapman steal and the second
out of the inning, sophomore Taylor
Vandegrift got the big hit of the inning -
and the game - with a double to left scoring two and extending the
lead to 3-0. Vandegrift led the offense, going 3-for-3 with those
two RBIs.
Junior pitcher Megan Magee was spotless
through five. She sailed into choppy waters in the top of the sixth
as the Eagles loaded the bases with two gone. Krissy
Leber legged out an infield single, chasing home a pair
which cut its deficit to 3-2. Magee struck out three while allowing
eight hits and the two runs. The Bobcats got one back in
their half of the sixth on a Foy sacrifice fly.

Kerry Busby singled and doubled for
