Christopher Newport Men's Cross Country Takes 2nd at NCAA South/Southeast Regional, Earns National Championship Berth

Christopher Newport placed second at the NCAA South/Southeast Regional on Saturday, becoming the first CAC men's cross country team to qualify for the NCAA National Championship meet. Six CAC runners earned All-Region recognition with top-35 finishes. 

CNU and Mary Washington competed at the South/Southeast Regional in Kernstown, Va., while York, Salisbury, Frostburg State and St. Mary's ran at the Mideast Regional in Newville, Pa.

Christopher Newport made history on Saturday, placing second overall with 96 points to secure a team bid into the NCAA Championships. This marks the first time a CAC men's cross country team has accomplished that feat, and the third time CNU has advanced to nationals as a team, with the others coming in 1984 and 1994. The Captains were edged out by first-place Emory by just 10 points for the team crown. 

A quartet of CNU runners claimed All-Region accolades, led by Grayson Reid in fifth place with a time of 26:05.9. Andrew Benfer was next to cross in 26:39.5 in 13th place, while Billy Rabil finished 15th at 26:43.8. Daniel Read rounded out the All-Region efforts for CNU finishing 27th with a time of 27:09.5 in the 8k, while Jeffrey Dover finished just outside All-Region recognition in 36th at 27:18.0. 

Mary Washington placed 10th in the team standings with 266 points, led by All-Region honorees Ian Granger (29th/27:12.0) and Kevin Jones (31st/27:12.3). Stirling Calhoun also posted a strong finish for UMW, claiming 41st at 27:32.3. 

Mideast Regional | Newville, Pa. 

York placed 10th to lead a contingent of four CAC squads at the Mideast Regional hosted by Dickinson. The Spartans totaled 336 points to nab 10th, followed closely by Salisbury in 11th with 356 points. 

Salisbury's Connor Hesselbirg was the top individual finisher out of the CAC, taking 37th at 26:24.7, just ahead of York's Grant Dell, who finished in 26:25.6. York's Alex Smith also posted a top-50 finish, claiming 42nd in 26:36.2. 

Frostburg State finished 32nd with 989 points, led by Robert Romano in 127th, while St. Mary's took 37th place and was paced by Aidan Hennessey in 187th.
