Salisbury's Luke Campbell Claims National Titles in 110 and 400 Hurdles; Christopher Newport's Dominique Torres, Wesley 4x100 Team and York's Tim Hartung Garner All-America Recognition
Salisbury sophomore Luke Campbell captured two national championships to highlight the final day of action at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships on Saturday in Delaware, Ohio, while Christopher Newport sophomore Dominique Torres, York senior Tim Hartung and the Wesley 4x100 relay team also secured All-America honors.
Campbell captured top honors in the 110 and 400-meter hurdles, defending his national title in the 110 hurdles and earning his fifth and sixth career All-America honors. He also set new school records in both events - times that were among the best ever recorded by a Division III student-athlete. Campbell crossed in 13.82 seconds in the 110 and 50.36 in the 400.
The 20 points that Campbell earned for the two wins was good for a 12th-place finish for the men's team. Mount Union claimed the team title, with 47 points.
Campbell's four individual sport titles are the most by any student-athlete in school history, and the six All-American awards he has earned in his two seasons are just one shy of Delannie Spriggs, who collected seven from 2007-2010.
He is now in a select group of just 54 Division III student-athletes who have won three or more outdoor national championships in their career, with two more seasons of eligibility remaining.
Christopher Newport's Torres earned All-American honors for the second time this year after placing second in the triple jump with a mark of 14.89 meters, earning him All-America honors.
Guided by Torres' second-place showing and Richard Roethel national championship in the decathlon on Friday, CNU concluded the NCAA Championships with 18 points. That tied the Captains for 14th in the final team standings. That marks the top finish by the men since placing 13th during the 2008 Outdoor Championships.
Along with Torres' performance, Jessica McClelland also competed on Saturday for CNU and capped off her career with an 11th place effort in the women's 1500 with a time of 4:44.12.
The Wesley 4x100 relay team of Patrick Schlosser, DaJahn Lowery, Markael Jenkins and Johnny Crenshaw finished third, running to a CAC and stadium-record time of 40.71. The Wolverines placed just behind La Verne (40.52) and Greenville (40.58).
Taking the bronze medal and six points marks the highest finish for the Wolverines at the National Championships.
York's Hartung closed out his career with an eighth-place finish in the 5,000 meters with a time of 14:36.23. This is his seventh All-America honors and fifth of the 2013-14 year. He also claimed eighth in the 10,000 meters yesterday.
York freshman Robert Doster also competed on Saturday afternoon as he placed 17th in the javelin at 55.43 meters.
