CAC Men's Track & Field Teams Post Strong Performances at Penn Relays; Salisbury's Campbell Breaks CAC 110 Hurdles Mark

In a final tune-up prior to next weekend's CAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships, five CAC men's track & field teams competed over the weekend, including three at the historic Penn Relays at the University of Pennsylvania. 

Mary Washington, Salisbury and Wesley each traveled to Franklin Field in Philadelphia for the 120th Penn Relays, while Frostburg State and York competed at the Paul Kaiser Classic hosted by Shippensburg. 

At the Penn Relays, Salisbury sophomore Luke Campbell broke the school and CAC record in the 110-meter hurdles on Friday, crossing in 14.21 seconds, the fastest time in Division III this season.  Campbell placed 14th in the event, beating runners from such schools as Penn State University, Auburn University, and Texas Tech University.

On Saturday afternoon, in Salisbury's final event of the weekend, the men's 4x800-meter relay team of juniors George Martinez and Thomas Burke and sophomores Ian Wood and Eric Wood shattered the school record, finishing in 7:37.20, cutting nearly 10 seconds off the SU mark set last season of 7:46.50.

Wesley participated in the 4x100, 4x200 and 4x400 relays on the day. The 4x100 team of sophomore De'Vaughn Trader and freshmen Da'Jahn LoweryPatrick Schlosser and Markael Jenkins finished first among Division III teams in 42.02 and 37th of 92 teams.  Some of the notable teams that Wesley defeated were Rider, Lehigh, Harvard and Delaware State.

The 4x200 Relay consisted of all freshman with Lowery, Schlosser, Jenkin and Johnny Crenshaw. Wesley took 23rd of 51 squads in a school-record 1:26.95 while being matched up in a heat with LSU, Pittsburg, Middle Tennessee and NC Central and narrowly defeating teams from UNC-Wilmington, Maryland, Penn, Missouri and Temple.

Mary Washington was represented at the Penn Relays by the 4x100 meter relay team and the 4x400 meter relay team, each competing on Friday.  The 4x400 relay, consisting of Allan Meyer, Matt Shaughnessy, Zach Kerns, and Glenn Taylor, finished in 66th place, just behind Division I South Carolina, with a time of 3:23.46. The 4x100 meter relay of Issac Hayes, Glenn Taylor, Allan Meyer, and Zach Kerns, finished in 57th place at 42.77 seconds, just behind Howard and ASA-Brooklyn.

At the Paul Kaiser Classic, Frostburg State earned six top-10 finishes. Freshman Ian Williams picked up the top finish for the Bobcats with a second-place finish in the 400-meter dash with an ECAC qualifying time of 49.69. Frostburg also did well in the relays, starting with the 4x400-meter relay team of freshman Jeremiah Parker, senior Matthew Collins, sophomore Sterling Hardy, and junior Anthony Hayden who earned a third-place finish with a time of 3:26.57. The 4x800-meter relay team of freshman Gartee Guar along with the sophomore trio of Jeremy Brown, Gregory Horning, and Daniil Repchenko was able to grab a fifth-place finish (8:58.66).

York senior All-American Tim Hartung finished third in the 10,000 meters at 34:28.75, followed closely by Connor Simpson in fourth, just 0.04 seconds behind Hartung. Junior Michael Stetson finished fourth of 67 runners in the 1500, clocking a time of 4:03.52. Matt Hayes placed fifth in the 3K as he notched a time of 9:09.13, while Robert Doster placed fifth in the javelin with a best toss of 48.89 meters. 

The 2014 CAC Track & Field Championships will take place from May 3-4 at Christopher Newport University.
