Christopher Newport's David Reed & Justin Cerny Selected to NCAA Men's Tennis Doubles Championship
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- The Christopher Newport men's tennis tandem of juniors Justin Cerny and David Reed have been selected to participate in the NCAA Division III Men's Tennis Doubles Championship, while the Mary Washington duo of Ryland Byrd and Michael Fleming were chosen as the second alternate in the field.
Cerny and Reed are one of 16 doubles teams to compete in the individual national championships, which will be played from May 25-27 in Chattanooga, Tennessee. The national championship event will be played at The Champions Tennis Club in Chattanooga, and will be hosted by the University of the South and the Chattanooga Sports Commission.
Cerny and Reed were ranked No. 2 in the Atlantic South in the final ITA/Oracle Regional Rankings of the regular season. The Captains were 14-7 overall with a 12-6 mark in dual action this season, while playing all 18 of their matches together on the top line.
The national committee selected three doubles teams from each of the four regions before adding four doubles team berths from a national at-large pool to round out the 16-team bracket. The selection of teams and individuals for the championships is based on win-loss record, strength of schedule, and eligibility and availability of student-athletes.
The draw for the individual championship will be done by the men's tennis committee and will be released on May 24, the final day of the team championship.
