Mary Washington Men's Tennis Tops Salisbury and St. Mary's on Wednesday
The 21st-ranked Mary Washington men's tennis team improved to 5-0 in CAC play with conference road wins at St. Mary's and Salisbury on Wednesday. The Eagles improved to 12-6 on the year with the two wins.
In Salisbury, Md., the Eagles won by a score of 7-2 over Salisbury (6-6, 1-1). In doubles, the Eagles got wins at No. 2 and No. 3, as Nolan Perugini and Eric Hurwitz won at No. 2, 8-1, and Patrick Hughes and Derek Hagino won at No. 3, 8-2. Salisbury's Eric Spangler and Shanon Gunther secured the win at No. 1, 9-7.
In singles, Spangler topped 32nd-ranked Brandon Griffin 6-3, 6-3 at the No. 1 spot for the Sea Gulls other point. UMW received straight-set singles wins from Hurwitz at No. 2, Matt Miles at No. 3, Hughes at No. 4, Perugini at No. 5 and Hagino at No. 6.
In St. Mary's City, Md.,UMW picked up a 6-3 win over St. Mary's. In doubles play, Max Fritsch and David Lunding-Johansson won at No. 1, 8-1, and Ryan Berry and Axel Jobeus won at two, 8-1. The St. Mary's duo of Byron Dickerson and Kyle Van Winter captured the win at No. 3 doubles, 8-1.
In singles, UMW won points at No. 1-4 to close out the win. Lunding-Johansson won at No. 1, 6-3, 6-0; Fritsch won at No. 2, 6-0, 6-2; Jobeus won at No. 3, 6-1, 6-2; and Berry won at No. 4, 6-0, 6-4. St. Mary's Connor McKissick posted a 6-1, 6-1 victory at No. 5 while James Loftis earned a 6-0, 6-1 triumph at No. 3 for the Seahawks' third point of the day.
