Mary Washington's Tyler Carey Advances to NCAA Singles Quarterfinals; Carey and Evan Charles Drop First Round Doubles Three-Setter

Mary Washington senior Tyler Carey won a pair of singles matches at the NCAA Division III Championship on Thursday, advancing to Friday's quarterfinal round. Carey later teamed up with doubles partner Evan Charles, with the duo dropping a tough three-setter in the round of 32.
In the first round of singles play, Carey rolled past Mohanad Al-Houni of Gustavus Adolphus, 6-0, 6-1. Carey was never threatened, winning the first set without allowing a point, and then jumping out to a 5-0 lead in the second before taking a 6-1 triumph.
In the second round, Carey overcame a first set tiebreaker loss to down third-seeded Ari Smolyar of Middlebury, 6-7(6), 6-3, 6-4 to move on to the quarterfinals. Carey will meet Skyler Butts of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Friday at 10 a.m. with a spot in the semifinals at stake. Carey is now 21-11 on the year entering Friday's action.
Carey and Charles then dropped their first round doubles matchup to the Redlands duo of Nicolas Cummins and Patrick Lipscomb 4-6, 6-4, 6-3. The UMW tandem close out the year at 18-10.
