Christopher Newport Edges Salisbury, 5-4, in CAC Men's Tennis Semifinals; Mary Washington Blanks York
Top-seeded Mary Washington and third-seeded Christopher Newport secured CAC Men's Tennis semifinal wins on Tuesday, setting up a championship showdown between the two nationally-ranked squads in the CAC.
Mary Washington, ranked 18th in the country, and CNU, ranked 37th, will meet on Sunday in Fredericksburg, Va. at the Battleground. Match time has yet to be announced.
Less than a week following a tight 5-4 decision in the regular season finale that went Salisbury's way, Tuesday's matchup between the Sea Gulls and Captains also came down to the final match at the No. 5 singles position. This time, however, it was CNU's Arttu Fiva who came out on top against Salisbury's Sean Ngo, overcoming a 4-2 deficit in the third set for a 6-3, 5-7, 6-4 victory.
CNU claimed a 2-1 edge after doubles, with the key point coming at No. 3 doubles. Fiva teamed with Max Katcher to edge out Ngo and Shanon Gunther by a 9-7 score in a back-and-forth matchup. CNU grabbed its other doubles point at No. 2, as Chiraag Shetty and Steven Boslet posted an 8-3 triumph over Adam Goldberger and Demetri Vrahnos. In a battle of regionally-ranked foes at No. 1, Salisbury's sixth-ranked duo of Eric Spangler and Daniel Albers defeated 11th-ranked Justin Cerny and David Reed 8-5.
In singles, Gunther evened the match at 2-2 for the Sea Gulls with a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 4 over Shetty. Christopher Newport retook the lead with the point at No. 6 singles from Katcher, who edged Goldberger in a tight two-set match, 7-6 (7-5), 7-6 (7-4). Vrahnos then topped Cerny 6-2, 7-5 at No. 3, evening the match back up at 3-3.
At No. 1 singles, Reed (No. 14) outlasted Albers (No. 22) in a matchup of regionally-ranked opponents by scores of 7-6 (8-6), 5-7, 6-2. Spangler, ranked No. 25 in the region, followed with a 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 triumph at No. 2 against Boslet, once again squaring the match at 4-4, before Fiva closed out the win for the Captains.
In Tuesday's other semifinal, UMW blanked York 9-0, improving to 19-5 on the year. The Eagles dropped just seven total games throughout the six singles matchups, and lost just two games in doubles play en route to the convincing win.
